#GMVEMSC: Routing Changes at Sycamore Medical Center

Sycamore Medical Center is updating the main lobby.  The main lobby will be closed for 5 weeks starting September 29th.  One of the routes for inpatient discharges and patient pick up/drop off will be at the East Ambulance/East Rehab entrance of the hospital. This temporary re-route plan has the potential to cause congestion in that area.  Please excuse the inconvenience while we make improvement to the campus for the patients we serve.

Learn steps to building an opiate-free practice.

We are facing an opioid epidemic—both locally and nationally. Over the years, the number of patients who have been prescribed high doses of long-acting narcotics has escalated. We see the consequences: In 2012, the number of overdose deaths outnumbered the number of deaths from motor vehicle accidents.

Kettering Health Network is presenting a tool for providers and pharmacists to be part of the solution. Designed in collaboration with Pain Management and Addiction Medicine, this proven program offers reference materials for clinicians that show alternatives to opioids for chronic or benign pain.

Receive the toolkit packet and stay for refreshments afterward.

#GMVEMSC: First Quarterly Triage Tag Day: September 26, 2017 at 8 AM

On behalf of Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association (GDAHA), Greater Miami Valley EMS Council (GMVEMSC), Dayton MMRS, and others, this is a reminder that our first Regional Quarterly Triage Day (QTD) Drill begins at 0800 Hours, September 26, 2017, and lasts until 0800 Hours on the September 27th

The next drill will be October 11, from 0800 to 0800.

Key points:

  • On QTDs, every patient in every ED will receive a Triage Ribbon and Green Triage Tag.  In most cases, those should be placed by EMS.
  • Actually assign every patient a SALT triage category (most will be yellow or green).
  • Apply a Triage Ribbon using the Ribbon Kit.
  • On QTDs, use GREEN Triage “Drill” Tags that have been distributed around the region.  For the most part, only Medics and Ambulances will have the GREEN Drill Tags, but first responder apparatus can and should apply a ribbon before the Medic arrives.
  • Fill out the Triage Tag with actual patient information.  Hospitals will manage HIPAA material when EMS turns the tags over to them.
  • DO NOT USE the “live” White Triage Tags for the drill.  Those are only for real world incidents.
  • On QTDs, EMS should complete a full runsheet on each patient.
  • Future drills will incorporate additional communications tools including the Regional Hospital Notification System (RHNS) and the HSR3-MCI Radio Talk Group.

·         Training materials for both EMS and hospitals are available at http://gmvemsc.org/training-mcicomm.html, and more information is below.

·         Hospitals are expected to

Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association (GDAHA), Greater Miami Valley EMS Council (GMVEMSC), Dayton MMRS, and others have been working to improve communications during mass casualty incidents (MCIs).  The group produced a “job aid” to assist both EMS and hospitals with the “comm” process.  Both the process and the job aid have been tested during multiple full scale exercises.  They are functional and available for use.

Now we’re taking the next steps:  training and exercise.  There are two trainings, one for hospital personnel (in the box at the bottom of the page) and one for EMS (box at the top of the page).  Watch the video (about 45 minutes), take a look at the handouts, and take the quiz, and you’ll receive a certificate for 1.5 hours of continuing education.  You can find either training here:  http://gmvemsc.org/training-mcicomm.html

Starting on September 26th, we’ll exercise the MCI communications processes.  Full information on the exercises is in the training.  They are called Quarterly Triage Day (QTD) Drills.  Beginning with the first QTD, for 24 hours every quarter, every patient in every Emergency Department will get a Triage Ribbon and a GREEN Triage Drill Tag (please do not use White “Live” Triage Tags for drills).  Obviously, this starts with EMS, but hospitals will place ribbons and tags on walk in patients.

What do you need to do to be ready?

·         Make sure your ambulance/medic unit or Emergency Department have packages of GREEN Drill Tags.  For EMS, those have been delivered to your County Emergency Management Agencies (EMAs).  Hospitals received the Drill Tags and other materials through the GDAHA Domestic Preparedness Coalition.

·         Have all EMS and ED personnel watch the MCI Communications Training using the link above.

·         Have a copy of the real-world MCI Communications Job Aids (we distributed copies electronically, and for EMS agencies, through the County EMAs).

·         Have copies of the first QTD Drill MCI Communications Job Aids.  Both Job Aids can be downloaded from the same link as the training.

By the way, EMAs also have new larger rings to hold the tear-off sections of the Triage Tags for EMS (the rings should go in the Transport Officer Clipboards along with a copy of the real-world MCI Communications Job Aid).  The clipboards already have a small ring for what replaced the “dog-ear” tear-offs on old tags, but people have said those rings are too small.  The new rings are much larger.

We also still have plenty of the Training (Blue) Tags.  Any agency doing MCI or triage training can have all they want – contact your EMA or Dayton MMRS.

Fire Prevention Week will be here in a few weeks October 8-14, 2017.  This years theme, Every Second Counts Plan 2 ways out! focuses on the importance of home fire drills.

Saturday, October 14 marks the second annual Home Fire Drill Day created by Nationwide's Make Safe Happen program. The observance day was developed to raise awareness of the risk of home fires and the need to practice fire drills at home – we do them at work and kids participate in them at school, but many families aren't practicing at home -- a place where is it even more important to be prepared because that is where many structure fires occur.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Make Safe Happen (MSH) program will partner this year in select states to pilot a fire safety program with the goal to broaden the reach and deliver impact around fire safety through social channels and event activation. Nationwide's Make Safe Happen program has social content that you can share via your social channels any time after September 21, 2017 in addition to the resources at Fire Prevention Week. In addition, there is an opportunity to partner with a local Nationwide Agent that will be available to help support your local events  in OH, DC, AR, and AZ . The Nationwide Agent will come prepared to distribute their Home Fire Drill Day Kits, which include the following items:

Emergency Contact Cards – resource for parents and caregivers to write down important phone numbers

Make Safe Happen Maps - provides an overview about the Make Safe Happen program, and a home map to help families get started on making their homes safer

Fire Escape Plan Magnet – a blank grid, with instructions, for families to map out their home fire escape plan

Coloring Books

Children's Fire Fighter Hats

If you are hosting an event and are interested in participating in this year's pilot program, please reach out to  CF Younger with Nationwide.  Thank you for your consideration.
